AXPONA 2025 – April 10, 2025 – The ATC SCM20ASL 2-way Stand-Mount Loudspeaker exemplifies ATC's commitment to marrying high-quality in-house drive units with finely-tuned on-board amplification for unmatched sound fidelity. This loudspeaker balances compact size with an expansive bandwidth, enhancing phase coherence, response speed, and dynamics through active operation. It's an ideal choice for small to medium-sized listening environments, and its sealed cabinet design guarantees controlled bass, even in tighter spaces or near walls.

Design and Technology

Integrating a 2-way active system into a 20-litre stand-mount cabinet, the SCM20ASL features ATC’s proprietary 150mm/6” ‘Super Linear’ Mid/Bass driver and a 25mm/1” ‘S-Spec’ dual-suspension tweeter. These drivers are powered by onboard class A/B MOSFET amplifiers, delivering 200W to the bass driver and 50W to the high-frequency driver. By carefully matching the performance and power output of each amplifier to the drivers' needs, the SCM20ASL ensures an incredible listening experience.

The Mid/Bass driver boasts a substantial 75mm/3” voice coil along with a short-coil (long-gap) motor assembly, implementing ATC’s distinctive ‘SL’ motor technology. This innovation minimizes distortion from upper bass to midrange, while the 25mm ‘S-Spec’ soft-dome tweeter incorporates a dual-suspension and high-energy 2.1 tesla motor, extending response beyond 20kHz and revealing intricate audio details.

The loudspeaker features active, analogue 2nd order Linkwitz-Riley crossovers operating at line level for maximum efficiency. Additionally, an all-pass filter optimizes phase response in the crossover region, resulting in significantly improved tonal balance and imaging.

User Controls and Inputs

Input to the SCM20ASL is made via a balanced XLR port located on the rear panel. Users have control over input sensitivity and low-frequency shelf cut/boost. This input sensitivity control allows for optimal adjustment of input gain, tailored to the user's source and pre-amplifier setup, facilitating a consistent performance. The low-frequency shelf control offers subtle bass response adjustments to better fit the acoustics of the listening room.

Cabinet Construction and Finishes

The SCM20ASL cabinet design emphasizes bracing for added stiffness and resonance suppression. Available in various real wood veneers and finishes, options include Cherry, Black Ash, Walnut, and Oak. For added elegance, premium finishes such as Rosewood, European Crown Cut Walnut, Burr Magnolia, and more are also available. The speaker is provided with a removable grille wrapped in black acoustically transparent cloth.

Why Choose Active Loudspeakers?

When striving for optimal performance, many high-end loudspeaker systems face hurdles due to passive crossover networks. Although passive systems can yield great results, multi-way loudspeakers unlock their full potential through active designs. Here are some benefits of active loudspeakers:

  • More accurate crossovers: Fixed filter load enhances precision.
  • Versatile crossover types: Active line-level operations provide a wider choice.
  • Greater dynamic range: Elimination of passive crossover losses enhances sound quality.
  • Optimally matched amplifiers: Efficient use of amplifier power as per driver demands.
  • Improved frequency response: Speaker-amp calibration leads to better stereo matching.
  • Enhanced driver control: Offers a more direct connection with reduced electrical resistance.
  • Reduced inter-modulation distortion: Lower operating bandwidth of amplifiers further enhances audio clarity.
