Audio Research Unveils New Core Amplification Products
Explore the new core amplification products from Audio Research, including integrated amplifiers and preamps, aimed at delivering exceptional audio quality.
Introduction to the New Lineup
At the Southwest Audio Fest, Audio Research made waves by announcing an impressive lineup of six new products, all set to enter production shortly. This is quite a feat for any company, especially one with Audio Research's esteemed reputation. What’s even more noteworthy is that these are core market products, aimed at serious audiophiles rather than extravagant luxury items. Let’s dive into the details!
I had the pleasure of visiting Audio Research's headquarters in Minneapolis, where I got an exclusive briefing and a chance to listen to their new core product offerings, slated for release in Q2 of 2025 (April – June).
Overview of New Products
Let’s break down what Audio Research is bringing to the table:
- i70 Integrated Tube Amplifier: Priced at approximately $8,500 (US), this 70-watt per channel preamp and power amp combo offers enhanced sonic definition and speaker control compared to its predecessor, the i50, while keeping that beloved musicality intact. It features a phono input compatible with MM or MC cartridges.
- LS3 Solid-State Preamplifier: With an estimated price of $9,000 (US), the LS3 stands out for its remarkably smooth sound, characterized by minimal grain or added texture. It comes with two card slots for optional upgrades: a DAC and an MM/MC phono stage.
- LS2 Tube Preamplifier: Retailing for around $10,000 (US), the LS2 features a tube gain stage, offering a different sonic character rather than being a straightforward upgrade over the LS3. It also supports similar card slot options.
- S100 Solid-State Power Amplifier: With an estimated price of $9,500 (US), the S100 provides dynamism and control that make you question if you really need anything else. Its clean sound doesn’t come off as cold or artificial.
- S200 Solid-State Power Amplifier: Priced at about $12,000 (US), this powerhouse is designed for low sensitivity speakers, maximizing output while upholding the sonic qualities of the S100. It’s a robust amp that can handle significant demands.
- D80 Tube Power Amplifier: At an estimated $15,000 (US), the D80 aims to deliver much of what the renowned 160M tube amplifier offers, but at a more accessible price point. If they succeed, the D80 could be a great match for the right speakers and listeners.
When you consider Audio Research’s production process, these prices can seem like a steal. Of course, each consumer must evaluate what’s affordable for them; if Audio Research can deliver enhanced performance at more competitive prices, it could represent solid value for audiophiles in this range.
The Legacy of Audio Research
To fully appreciate the significance of these new offerings, one must understand the rich history of Audio Research. Founded in the late 1960s by Bill Johnson, the company broke from the norm by creating preamps and power amps based on vacuum tubes, during a time when transistors dominated the audio landscape. Johnson recognized that vacuum tubes provided distinct advantages in linearity, essential for analog audio reproduction.
I recall hearing his SP-3a preamp in the mid-‘70s, and it was a revelation.
This sentiment is shared by many audiophiles, as our publication has chronicled the impact of the SP-3 series and its subsequent iterations. While Johnson championed tube technology, he also recognized the cost implications, which led to the development of solid-state products. Although these weren't initially well-received, they paved the way for a broader understanding of audio technology.
Audio Research's New Direction
So, what’s changed with the current iteration of Audio Research? We can identify three distinct phases of the company’s evolution. The first was the legendary Johnson-led era; the second involved private equity ownership, which had its ups and downs; and now we have a fresh, privately-held Audio Research under CEO Val Cora.
Cora's leadership has brought clarity and direction to the company. From our discussions with the management team, it’s clear there is a strong game plan in place. As the details unfold in upcoming reviews of these products, a couple of key points stand out:
- Musical Believability at the Core: Cora has made it a priority to prioritize musicality and believability in the design of new products. Each design process incorporates feedback mechanisms that place musicality first, then seeks to reduce costs while improving performance.
- Dream Design Teams: Cora has assembled talent-rich design teams, such as “Team Tube” led by Dylan Constan-Wahl and “Team Solid-State” led by Mike Bettinger, ensuring dedication to high-quality audio without compromise. A third team, “Team Beyond-The-Edge,” will focus on innovative hybrid circuits for the future.
Conclusion
In summary, these new products mark an exciting chapter for listeners who value musical authenticity. The fresh direction of Audio Research is promising for those eager to see advancements in high-fidelity audio. We’ll delve deeper into these new releases in the coming weeks as we receive them for review.
