Bill Burr Admits to Eddie Vedder: “I Hated Your Band” at SNL50

In a humorous exchange at Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary, Bill Burr tells Eddie Vedder he once disliked Pearl Jam, but his feelings have changed.

A Hilarious Confession on Live TV

In a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, comedian Bill Burr opened up about a rather funny moment he had with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder during the iconic Saturday Night Live's 50th-anniversary show. Burr, promoting his Broadway debut in Glengarry Glen Ross, where he stars alongside notable actors like Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk, and Michael McKean, recounted telling Vedder how he once hated his band.

Teenage Years and Musical Evolution

Burr shared that he felt a sense of loss when Pearl Jam burst onto the scene. Reflecting on his teenage years as a fan of hair metal, he admitted, “Pearl Jam, that was the band that made me realize my youth was over.” This shift marked a new era in music that Burr found hard to accept.

As he reminisced, he noted, “And then Nirvana came in, and I was like, ‘What’s this?’ They always say, like, Nirvana knocked [the hair metal] out. It was Pearl Jam. When Pearl Jam came, that was another one of those grunge Seattle bands. And that’s when I was like, ‘Oh, my God. This isn’t ending.’”

The Shift in Perspective

Burr’s journey from disdain to admiration for Pearl Jam took over two decades. He humorously recalled, “Do you know how long it took me to admit how great a band Pearl Jam is? Because now I love ’em. But it was like 20 years where I just, like, ‘I’m not listening to those guys.’”

He found himself seated next to Vedder at SNL50, which offered a unique opportunity to clear the air. “I did it in good nature,” Burr recounted with a laugh, “I was like, ‘Man, I hated your band. You ended my thing.’” His candidness elicited laughter from Vedder, showing that even in humor, there's a level of sincerity.
