Honor Earbuds Open: The Game-Changing Earbuds You Need to Try
Check out the innovative features of the Honor Earbuds Open, including noise cancellation and AI translation!
First Impressions of Honor Earbuds Open
When I first got my hands on the Honor Earbuds Open, I had to approach them with a fresh perspective. You see, these earbuds are designed to rest in the ear rather than sealing it off completely. On my initial test, I handed them over to my partner, who has a unique aversion to earbuds that actually sit inside the ear canal. Surprisingly, the Honor Earbuds Open fit him perfectly!
For over an hour, we enjoyed listening to The Beatles and Arctic Monkeys, and I couldn’t help but notice the smile on his face as we discussed the sound quality. The Honor Earbuds Open made their debut at MWC 2025, and while this isn't a full review, my first impressions are quite positive—especially considering how comfortable they felt.
A Growing Trend in Open-Ear Design
Let's be honest, open-ear earbuds are currently trending. Huawei recently pointed out that this type of design is the fastest-growing product category in consumer audio, with a staggering 600% year-on-year increase in new open-ear models. It would be easy to lump the Honor Earbuds Open into that crowd as just another pair, but I refuse to do that.
One of the standout features of these earbuds is their incredibly sleek and stylish case. I’ve honestly never seen such a compact case in this category—it's about twice as thin as the Powerbeats Pro 2. Holding it feels more like you're carrying a high-end cosmetics pouch, thanks to its matte plastic finish that resembles natural leather.
Unmatched Sound Quality and Comfort
Inside each earbud, there is a unique spherical speaker housing paired with a “16 mm toroidal multi-magnet driver.” This larger passive driver uses its round shape to transmit energy via a magnetic field, creating a kind of electro-motive force. And let me tell you, it works exceptionally well. With features like a crescent-shaped band, a full-moon housing, and an ultra-thin design, I found them to be incredibly easy to put on.
But are they reliable enough for rigorous sports activities? Maybe not, but I haven’t had the chance to test this out yet. What I can say is that even during some intense head movements, they stayed firmly in place. With each earbud weighing in at just 7.9 grams and boasting three microphones—including a bone conduction mic—Honor claims that these earbuds provide excellent call quality, even in wind speeds up to 6 m/s.
Innovative Features and Performance
Honor claims that these earbuds feature the "first industry algorithm for virtual bass and dynamic bass compensation." While you can’t turn this feature off in the Honor AI Space app, you can select a "Workout Booster" mode in the equalizer tab to enhance the sound further and cut through gym noise.
The initial bass line is surprisingly resonant, powerful, and rich—more than I’ve experienced in similar designs. It’s so impressive that I found myself replaying tracks, which is done by triple-tapping the left earbud—a slightly awkward method for capacitive touch buttons, but it works well here. On first listen, the sound is neutral, nuanced, and clear, all while maintaining an open yet cohesive mix.
Connectivity and Battery Life
As for connectivity, these earbuds utilize Bluetooth 5.2, and their IP54 rating provides protection against dust and moisture. The claimed battery life is around 6 hours for the earbuds themselves or up to 22 hours with the charging case. While this is acceptable by today's standards, it's worth noting that buds like the Powerbeats Pro 2 can last for 10 hours without a charge, adding up to a total of 45 hours with the case.
Oh, and let's not forget the noise cancellation feature, which is quite unusual for an earbud of this design. If it proves effective, it will undoubtedly enhance the overall value of the device. At the time of writing, the official pricing and availability are still under wraps, but rest assured that I’ll keep you updated as soon as I learn more.
Final Thoughts
Despite wearing the Honor Earbuds Open for over two hours without discomfort, my partner just asked if she could listen to them again once I'm done with this write-up! If that’s not high praise, I don’t know what is.
