A Sad Farewell to a Music Legend

Joey Molland, the guitarist celebrated for his pivotal role in Badfinger, has sadly departed this world at the age of 77. This heartbreaking news was shared on the band's official Facebook page, revealing that he passed away on Saturday, March 1, surrounded by his family. Although a cause of death wasn't disclosed, it was noted that Molland had been battling pneumonia in the months leading up to his death.

“Thank you, Joey…for keeping the band’s music alive for so long and for being a friend to us all,” the band expressed in their heartfelt tribute.

Badfinger: A Historical Context

Formed in Wales, Badfinger was one of the pioneering artists to be signed by The Beatles to their Apple Records label. The band carved a niche for themselves in the music scene with their distinctive guitar-driven power pop sound. Molland joined Badfinger in 1970, just a few months after the release of their second album, *Magic Christian Music*.

Musical Milestones and Memorable Hits

Molland's inaugural record with Badfinger was the 1970 album *No Dice*, produced by the legendary Beatles road manager, Mal Evans. This record featured two of the band's biggest hits: the iconic tracks "No Matter What" and "Without You." The latter gained immense popularity through covers by artists like Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey.

Celebrating Timeless Tracks:

The classic lineup of Molland, guitarist/singer Pete Ham, bassist Tom Evans, and drummer Mike Gibbins continued to thrive until 1974, frequently working with the talented George Harrison for their music production. They churned out more hits like "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue," the latter of which gained newfound fame when featured in the final moments of the acclaimed television series *Breaking Bad*.

The Later Years and Solo Endeavors

After the original lineup disbanded, Molland took on songwriting and vocal duties with a reformed version of Badfinger during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. He later established Molland’s Badfinger, a project that remained active until recent years.

Beyond his work with Badfinger, Molland made significant contributions as a guitarist for John Lennon on his classic 1971 track "Jealous Guy" and was featured on George Harrison's iconic album *All Things Must Pass* in 1970.

The Last Surviving Member

Joey Molland was the last surviving member of the classic Badfinger lineup. The band's history is unfortunately marked by tragedy, with Pete Ham and Tom Evans both having taken their own lives in 1975 and 1984, respectively. Drummer Mike Gibbins also passed away due to a brain aneurysm in 2005.
