Sony WF-C710N: Affordable Headphones with Impressive Features Now Available!

Explore the all-new Sony WF-C710N headphones, offering enhanced battery life and user-friendly features.

Introduction to the Sony WF-C710N

You’ve probably heard about the amazing Sony WF-C700N headphones; they were the reigning champions in the budget in-ear headphone category for over a year after their launch back in April 2023. However, after the arrival of the Nothing Ear (a) 13 months later, we’ve seen a shake-up in the ranks. After careful deliberation, we recognized that the Nothing Ear (a) had earned its place at the top.

But fear not, there's a new contender in town: the Sony WF-C710N! With a design that’s a mere 10 steps ahead of its predecessor, the naming convention might be a bit confusing (Sony likes to keep us guessing), but what’s important is that these headphones are here to replace the WF-C700N, and the 'N' in the name stands for noise-cancellation.

Design and Color Options

Let’s take a moment to admire the charming new color—"Blue Glass", in addition to the classic black, white, and pink options. The transparency resembles sea glass, which is a refreshing change. For those who remember how Nothing played around with transparent stems and driver casings, this seems like a simple yet attractive enhancement.

Specifications of Sony WF-C710N

So, what improvements can we expect?

  1. Battery Life:
    • With no noise cancellation (ANC) active, Sony promises an impressive 40 hours of battery life—12 hours from the earbuds and an additional 28 hours from the charging case. With ANC turned on, you’ll get about 8.5 hours from the earbuds and 21.5 hours from the case, leading to a total of 30 hours before you need to plug in via USB-C. This is a significant upgrade from the previous model's 20 hours without ANC and 15 hours with it.
  2. Sound Connect App:
    • A brand-new companion app called "Sound Connect" has been launched, featuring a five-band equalizer and the nifty "Find My Equalizer" function. Users can play various tracks and choose from five presets to create a personalized audio profile that suits their ears.
  3. User Recognition:
    • The WF-C710N comes equipped with a user recognition feature, which pauses the sound when you remove an earbud and resumes it when you reinsert it. This is a much-appreciated feature for those who often remove one earbud.
  4. Touch Controls:
    • The touch controls have returned, allowing users to adjust the volume, play/pause music, access noise-cancellation profiles, and call out digital assistants like Google Assistant or Siri hands-free. You’ll also find a "Quick Attention" feature, which pauses playback when you remove one earbud while amplifying ambient sounds so you can hear someone talking to you at your desk. (This is a fantastic function—I can’t get enough of it!)

Audio Technology

In these headphones, you’ll find two microphones per earbud with a new "dual noise-cancellation" technology that utilizes AI to enhance your voice while minimizing background noise during calls. There’s also a specialized mesh to reduce wind noise, which is a great touch.

Moreover, the WF-C710N supports multipoint connectivity with two devices, adaptive sound control for ANC, and Sony's 360 Reality Audio (though it's noteworthy that Tidal no longer supports this format). Additionally, there’s Sony’s entry-level DSEE upscaling, which makes even low-quality Spotify streams sound closer to their original quality.

Drawbacks and Price

However, not everything is perfect. The 5mm drivers remain unchanged, and despite the inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3, the WF-C710N won’t support Auracast audio streams anytime soon. LDAC high-resolution support is also missing, with codec support limited to SBC and AAC. The ear tips are available in just three sizes—small, medium, and large. Fortunately, the previous model fits smaller ears quite well, so I don’t foresee any major issues with comfort.

As for the price? The Sony WF-C710N is priced at around $100.
