System Of A Down's Exciting Tour Announcement
The legendary band System Of A Down has officially announced that they will be making some major changes to their setlists for the highly anticipated 2025 tour. This announcement has sparked excitement among fans who are eager for fresh tunes and surprises.
A packed Tour Schedule
Last December, System Of A Down revealed their longest string of tour dates in years. They will be hitting up South America in April and May, followed by North America in August and September. It's a thrilling time for fans; all these dates are sold out!
This marks the first time since 2017 that the band will perform back-to-back shows for an extended period. If you’ve followed their recent tour history, you know they’ve only been able to perform one or two shows a year.
Bassist Shavo Odadjian's Thoughts
Bassist Shavo Odadjian expressed his excitement about these upcoming shows, mentioning that they are designed to “test the waters” after years of sporadic performances. “The relationships were not as great as they are now. It’s just everybody wasn’t on the same page. We’ve been talking. Everything’s great, knock on wood. Everyone’s happy,” he shared during an interview on SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk in January.
Innovative Setlist Approach
In a recent chat with SNSMix.com, Odadjian disclosed that each night of the back-to-back shows will feature a different setlist.
“We’ll probably change the set up drastically between each one, so if you come to both shows, you’ll hear different songs,” said Odadjian.
He continued, “We’re going to play two-hour sets. We’ll go through the catalog. We’ve got 70-plus songs, but we’ll do 30 of them — maybe 27 to 30 songs — and we’ll mix and match.”
Future Music Possibilities
When asked about what this tour could mean for new music, Odadjian clarified that nothing is set in stone. Reflecting on this, he stated, “I can’t promise. We haven’t said anything. Like I said, man, there is no pressure. We said, ‘Let’s get together. Let’s play these shows, see how it goes.’”
The group hasn’t released an album since their two back-to-back releases in 2005: Mezmerize and Hypnotize. In a conversation with Metal Hammer last year, frontman Serj Tankian revealed that he “became very passive” during the writing and recording of those albums.
Odadjian expressed uncertainty regarding Tankian's earlier statements and maintained that hopes for new music are still low.
Navigating Band Dynamics
“I don’t know what he means by that,” Odadjian remarked. “We’ve done things a certain way in our career where it’s always going in a new direction. Every time we do something new, it’s in a direction you don’t expect."
In yet another candid moment, guitarist Daron Malakian admitted on his podcast with Rick Rubin that he’s “not sure how much I want” a new System Of A Down album anymore. He pondered, “It would have been nice to see where the band would have evolved if we kept putting music out. If we put out an album now, it’s just so far away from Mezmerize and Hypnotize; it doesn’t continue the story to me.”
