Introduction
Wireless speakers and online streaming might be all the rage, but the humble radio still has a strong foothold in many homes. In fact, DAB radios remain popular, and new models now come equipped with extra features like Bluetooth, internet radio, and even Wi-Fi in some cases to appeal to everyone.
The charm of the original “wireless” technology hasn’t faded: hundreds of music stations, news, and podcasts with a simple turn of the dial — all for free! No more streaming subscriptions, just a good signal. With a plethora of FM and DAB/DAB+ radio stations available, accessing hundreds of channels and staying updated with the latest music and news events has become easy and essential for many users. Nothing beats your favorite BBC 6 music program keeping you company in the kitchen or home office, as carefully curated tracks by experienced DJs outshine most AI-generated playlists.
Keep in mind that the number and quality of analog or digital radio stations you can receive depend on your location and proximity to the transmitter. The popularity and availability of DAB/DAB+ radios also vary depending on where you are in the world. They’re more widespread in the UK and some European countries but are nearly nonexistent in the US (where a different digital system is used).
Below, you’ll find our selection of the best DAB radios that we have tested and that impressed us with their features, ease of use, design, and overall sound quality at an affordable price. Oh, what a delightful device the Ruark Audio R2 Mk4 is! It is rare to find audio devices that combine the holy trinity: fantastic sound, gorgeous aesthetics, and ease of use so intuitive that even a newborn could likely navigate the menu. But the Ruark R2 (now in its fourth generation) accomplishes this fantastically, and does it stylishly.
The magnificent Ruark captivated our hearts as soon as we unpacked it, and it only got better when we turned it on and started listening. This is a good thing, considering its rather steep price. It features a rich, detailed sound that does not sacrifice musicality or rhythm, with particularly nuanced, natural vocals that elevate a good radio to something truly great. Ruark delivers an engaging, lively sound regardless of genre or playback method you utilize.
Moreover, as you might expect, it is a beautifully crafted device with a stunning wooden facade, a crisp display, and a high-quality casing that speaks to the care and precision taken in its production. Why can’t all devices look this good?!
It supports Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer over Wi-Fi, while all other music can be streamed from your device via Bluetooth. - Ruark R2 Mk4 provides strong competition
A modern radio/streaming system should be versatile while maintaining the classic look, features, and feel of a technical device. And while this requires managing a multitude of different demands, the Revo SuperConnect Stereo handles them all beautifully. It’s classically beautiful (more Rex Harrison than Timothée Chalamet), and its "retro with a touch of modernity" aesthetic captivates from the first glance. Only the Ruark R2 Mk4 looks better.
Additionally, it’s built to impressively high standards. Although the SuperConnect Stereo is slightly oversized for a radio, it comes with a plethora of streaming features, allowing you to play music from popular streaming services and even music stored on your network. Pair these dimensions with magnificent sound, and you have a true Hi-Fi system. As for the sound, Revo strikes the perfect balance, offering fullness, richness, and depth alongside detail, spaciousness, and an understanding of the music it reproduces. Ruark (as shown above) delivers a bit more sparkle, but Revo holds its own in power and strength.
User-friendly, stunningly designed, and pleasant to listen to, the Revo SuperConnect Stereo is a genuine alternative to a modern Hi-Fi system that also offers DAB radio as one of its many advantages.
Also Consider
- Roberts Stream 94L. Unfortunately, our favorite budget model has been discontinued. However, if you’re lucky enough to find this attractive, multifunctional 94L model for sale, we would snap it up without hesitation. It’s easy to listen to, has strong sound, and features Wi-Fi streaming.
- Majority Petersfield Go. Looking for a simple pocket-sized DAB/FM radio to listen to sports broadcasts and news on the go? This little clip-on radio costs just £30 but packs a ton of features (DAB/FM tuners, scanning, presets) and even comes with a pair of decent wired headphones. Swap them out for higher-quality headphones, and they'll handle basic tasks well.
- Roberts Revival Uno BT. This isn’t the highest-quality radio Roberts has ever produced, but the Uno BT with Bluetooth support looks stylish, is easy to use, and certainly has good sound quality.
- Revo SuperConnect. The standard model SuperConnect is still available (it provides monophonic sound compared to the stereo output of the newer model) and remains a sensible and slightly more affordable option for those who need excellent Revo sound in an attractive, well-made package.
How to Choose the Best DAB Radio
While all the radios on this list provide access to hundreds of digital stations, some models include several useful additional features, like Bluetooth streaming and integration with your favorite music streaming service.
The most important thing to decide when choosing a digital radio is what you need: a small, portable device or a larger, mains-operated one, or perhaps you want a radio that can be installed in your car. Then you’ll need to decide if you want just to listen to the radio or if you’re interested in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, DAB+ support, streaming capabilities, or even a CD player.
Price will, of course, matter, but it’s important to understand what you expect from the device based on your budget. Integration of the DAB/DAB+ tuner should be standard for any digital radio, but it’s worth checking how important Bluetooth streaming, FM tuner, and/or preset settings are.
In our review above, we’ve included both budget and premium options, including standard DAB digital radios and even various music streaming services. Perhaps you need something small and ridiculously cute; maybe you need it to fill a larger room — this list features the best digital radio options in all shapes and sizes.
But most importantly, all radios should perform well with both voices and music. Whether you choose a compact radio or a full-fledged radio system, each of the models recommended here stands out for its best features and value for money in its price bracket.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What’s the difference between FM and DAB? DAB radio (Digital Audio Broadcasting) uses digital technology to transmit radio broadcasts, while FM is an analog method of transmitting sound via radio waves. DAB radio generally sounds cleaner, with fewer interferences and noise, whereas FM radio can be noisy due to overlapping frequencies. DAB being digital and utilizing a wider bandwidth also offers additional information like station names, artist names, track titles, signal strength, and more. FM radio does not provide such metadata, only the frequency number.
- Which is better: FM radio or DAB radio? DAB and FM are two different formats: DAB is digital, while FM is analog, but which one sounds better depends entirely on signal strength and your location. FM radio can sound better, with more detail and depth, but the signal quality depends on your proximity to the radio station transmitter and its transmission power. A basic DAB station stream at 128 kbps may not sound as good as a strong FM station, but a compressed DAB station is your best bet if the FM signal is weak, intermittent, or too noisy.
- What’s the difference between DAB and DAB+? DAB+ is a newer version of DAB radio that uses the same transmitters and digital broadcasting technology as standard DAB, but with a more efficient and advanced codec. This means that DAB+ stations can potentially offer more channels and better sound quality at the same bandwidth. However, this also means that broadcasting companies often prefer to broadcast several stations at lower quality rather than one station at a higher sound quality on DAB+.
- Do I need Wi-Fi for DAB radio? No, all you need to listen to radio stations is a built-in DAB/DAB+ tuner, which should be standard in any radio. However, many radios and music systems today are equipped with Wi-Fi, allowing you to listen to popular music services and internet radio, but keep in mind that they typically cost more than standard DAB radios.
- What’s better: Internet radio or DAB radio? DAB radio (Digital Audio Broadcasting) uses digital technology to transmit radio broadcasts. Conversely, internet radio can connect to Wi-Fi and stream online stations. Internet radio gives you access to tens of thousands of radio stations available online from around the globe, so you have a lot more choice than with DAB radio. DAB radio is ideal if you prefer to listen to local and national stations, of which there are many, especially in the UK.
