Detailed Overview of the Best Speakers of 2025
1. KEF LS50 Meta — Best Overall Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Desktop
- Drivers: Uni-Q (25mm tweeter and 13cm mid/bass driver)
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: No
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 85 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 30.2 x 20 x 28 cm
- Weight: 7.8 kg
- Finishes: 4 (carbon black, titanium grey, mineral white, royal blue)
Pros:
- Exceptional sound transparency
- Subtle and precise presentation
- Innovative technology
Cons:
- Should not be placed on bookshelves or against walls
The original LS50 speakers were outstanding, but KEF believed they could improve upon their design. Eight years after the launch of the original LS50, the LS50 Meta was introduced, presenting a worthy upgrade. With numerous awards under their belt, the LS50 Meta continues to impress with its incredibly refined, transparent, and engaging performance.
KEF has reworked the Uni-Q driver array in the LS50, where the tweeter is positioned in the middle of the mid/bass driver. They have integrated all the improvements developed over the last eight years and introduced new technologies such as Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). This technology deals with sound emanating from the rear of the tweeter dome using a labyrinth of tubes on the rear panel, which absorbs sound more efficiently, providing cleaner and less distorted high frequencies.
This design works excellently — the high frequencies are now more refined and clearer than before, making it an impactful addition to many other KEF speaker lines. While the fundamental sound character remains recognizable, the LS50 Meta achieves new levels of clarity and elegance that the originals couldn't match. These speakers produce clear and taut sound, while still offering the muscle and dynamics that add power, character, and interest to your music.
In our opinion, the LS50 Meta represents one of the best value-for-money speakers around and is compatible with a wide range of associated products. They continue to set benchmarks at this level that others should aspire to reach.
2. Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 — Best Budget Desktop Speakers
Specifications:
- Drivers: 25mm tweeter, 13cm mid/bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: No
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 88 dB/W/m
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 31.2 x 18 x 27.8 cm
- Weight: 6.8 kg
- Finishes: 3 (light oak, black oak, pearl walnut)
Pros:
- Detailed yet calm character
- Smooth mid-range
- Nice build and finish
Cons:
- Other budget competitors offer more rhythmic flexibility and transparency
Wharfedale's Diamond series has always aimed to deliver top-quality sound at accessible prices. More than 40 years later, they continue to fulfill that mission. The current Diamond 12.1 bookshelf speakers come with updated drivers and improved cabinet construction, yet they remain as recommendable as they were when we first tested them in 2020.
The Diamond 12.1 speakers produce a bold, rich sound with plenty of detail. They sound balanced and refined, which is quite unusual for a budget price point. They deliver a more authoritative and expansive sound than you might expect given their modest price and size, and while we don't expect bone-shaking bass from such small speakers, the low frequencies sound full and deep, which is quite satisfying at this level.
Overall, these speakers have a smooth tonal balance and gentle character, yet they possess enough edge and convincing dynamics to keep you engaged with the music. At this level, the rhythmic drive and nuances of details are also well represented.
At this price point, the "Diamonds" face serious competition from other excellent budget speakers. We remain big fans of the expressive and agile Dali Spektor 2, while the award-winning Elac Debut B5.2 offered slightly more rhythmic agility and transparency. However, this model has been discontinued, opening the door for the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 to become budget favorites due to their ease of management, making them compatible with most components.
3. Wharfedale Diamond 12.3 — Best Budget Floor Standing Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Floor Standers
- Drivers: 25mm tweeter, 2 x 13cm mid/bass drivers
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: Yes
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 89 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 97.5 x 18 x 34.8 cm
- Weight: 19.6 kg
- Finishes: 3 (light oak, black oak, pearl walnut)
Pros:
- Wonderfully balanced presentation
- Expressive and revealing mid-range
- Nice build and finish
Cons:
- Performs best when given a bit of breathing room
In the Diamond series, Wharfedale now boasts a truly outstanding (and affordable) floor-standing speaker. We are so impressed with the musical sound of the Wharfedale Diamond 12.3 that it has repeatedly won awards.
Standing at 98 cm tall, the Diamond 12.3 doesn’t present as especially imposing floor speakers, making them suitable for most spaces. They produce a smooth, balanced, and surprisingly refined sound for their price range. If you feed them a weak signal, they will smooth out sharp edges and reduce unwanted aggression without drowning out the music.
In our initial review, we noted: “Turn them up, and these speakers won’t complain. They enthusiastically deliver Hans Zimmer’s Gladiator's tense track, capturing its fierce dynamics beautifully. When required, they sound powerful and energetic, yet also nuanced, which is rare for floor speakers at this price.”
Build quality is top-notch for the relatively low price. The cabinet design is traditional and stable with tidy feet for stability. These speakers are available in four finishes: black, walnut, white, and stylish light brown, allowing them to complement any decor.
If you're in the market for Hi-Fi floor-standing speakers at a reasonable price, the talented Wharfedale 12.3 is an excellent buy.
4. B&W 607 S3 — Best Mid-Range Desktop Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Desktop
- Drivers: 25mm tweeter, 13cm mid/bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: Yes
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 84 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 30 x 16.5 x 20.7 cm
- Weight: 4.65 kg
- Finishes: 3 (black, white, oak)
Pros:
- Enhanced clarity, refinement, and openness
- Rich, dynamic, and lively sound
- Stylish build and finish
Cons:
- Sweet high frequencies may sound slightly forward
- Requires careful system matching
- Price increase compared to predecessors
The Bowers & Wilkins 600 series, now in its eighth generation and existing for over 20 years, is often recognized for its excellent quality audio systems. This legacy continues with the latest entry-level 607 S3 speakers. They are the smallest and most affordable stereo speakers produced by B&W, even if their “budget” price has increased over the last couple of years.
The 607 S3 model has been entirely updated: it features a new 25mm titanium tweeter with a double dome, a new loading system with an extended tube, an updated motor for the 13cm Continuum mid/bass driver, higher-quality components in the crossover, and sturdier cabinet mounts. The overlapping arrangement of the two drivers is designed for improved integration, and B&W claims that the titanium material should deliver cleaner and more detailed high frequencies.
The size remains the same, making them perfect for smaller rooms. When paired correctly, balancing the slightly edgy, excitable high frequencies will reward you with astonishingly detailed, rhythmically cohesive, lively, and energetic sound. Overall, the sound is more open than before, with significantly sweeter and more refined high frequencies. For their size and price range, every note is reproduced accurately, maintaining dynamic interest even at low volumes. The bass sounds taut, and while not as deep as larger speakers (or similarly sized ones like the 606 S3), they still deliver a powerful performance.
Overall, they are an absolute joy to listen to. There is clarity and subtlety here — at a truly admirable level — and we are amazed at how engaging, energetic, and musical this new pair sounds right from the get-go. Alongside a new level of clarity, openness, and sound accuracy, the new 607 S3 speakers have also been designed to add a lot of energy and dynamism.
5. Fyne Audio F501E — Best Mid-Range Floor Standing Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Floor Standing
- Drivers: Isoflare array (25mm tweeter, 15cm mid/bass driver), 15cm bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: Yes
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 90 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 98.4 x 25 x 29.4 cm
- Weight: 18.9 kg
- Finishes: 1 (black ash)
Pros:
- Cohesive, expressive, and engaging presentation
- Tight and melodic bass
- Uniform dispersion characteristics
- High build quality
- Excellent value for money
Cons:
- Only available in one finish
Fyne Audio's new entry-level floor-standing speakers are aggressively priced. The F501E model uses the brand's patented Isoflare driver technology, which we have previously only seen in more premium models. These floor speakers deliver performance that exceeds that of more well-known competitors in this price segment.
As with PMC, the brand sacrificed visual aesthetics to keep the price below £1,000. This means that the F501E floor speakers are only available in one (and quite simple) color — black. However, the build quality is top-notch, and the speakers are equipped with smart technologies that simplify their placement and connection. The concentric Isoflare design, where the high-frequency driver is housed in the mid/bass driver, provides integrated sound with very even and wide dispersion. The low frequencies are uniformly distributed thanks to the down-firing port design and venting, and the Basstrax technology evenly distributes the low frequencies in a 360-degree range, allowing these speakers to be less dependent on placement in the room.
The F501E speakers are very pleasant to listen to, smoothly and expressively reproducing all music genres. The rhythm and dynamic shifts are conveyed with control and finesse, and instruments and vocals sound natural. Overall, the sound is clear and precise, with a well-balanced tonal quality — high frequencies are refined without becoming harsh or shrill when listening to complex material, while low frequencies remain firm and melodic, yet powerful enough. In our review, we noted, “The F501 delivers an open sound with vocals that superbly convey nuances and subtle changes in intensity. Competing Q Acoustics 5050, by contrast, sound a bit detached and mechanical.”
These speakers are remarkably insightful and capable of good low-frequency reproduction, blending sophistication with power to convincingly convey both intimate recordings and full-scale orchestral crescendos. At the asking price, we could not wish for more. We loved them, and we think you will too.
6. Epos ES-7N — Best Premium Desktop Speakers
Specifications:
- Drivers: 28mm aluminum dome tweeter with ceramic coating, 13cm polypropylene mid/bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: No
- Impedance: 4 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 86/89 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 29 x 20 x 27 cm
- Weight: 7.6 kg
- Finishes: 4 (orange atlas, walnut, white atlas, black atlas)
Pros:
- Pure, candid, and expressive sound
- Excellent dynamics and rhythmic drive
- Flexible character
- Can be placed inside bookshelves
Cons:
- Nothing special in the styling department
- Larger speakers may be needed for deeper bass and wider sound coverage
While we (and most manufacturers) recommend placing floor or bookshelf speakers on dedicated stands, Epos has made theirs slightly more versatile. Understanding that not everyone can place stands in their space, Epos has optimized its small ES-7N speakers to perform at their best even when positioned within a bookshelf.
Flip the switch on the back of these small speakers to the appropriate setting, and they will adjust their performance accordingly if you place them against a wall or in a corner to remain evenly balanced. It's impressive how close to free-standing (without wall support or on a stand) these speakers can perform if placed on an IKEA Kallax bookshelf, and despite a slight reduction in clarity and stereo effect, the overall sound quality is fantastic.
In fact, even though these are small speakers that cannot compete with larger models like the KEF R3 Meta, which deliver deeper bass, the excellence with which these Epos speakers reproduce music makes us smile with delight and tap our feet. They are incredibly talented.
As we remarked in our review: “The ES-7N is a bold and confident speaker that reproduces minute details and unifies them into a musical whole. Play Kendrick Lamar’s 'Not Like Us', and the Epos will deliver flawlessly. They sound taut and energetic in music like this, conveying the track's bouncy rhythm with remarkable confidence. There’s plenty of drive, and the speakers handle the changing tempo of the music beautifully.”
Voices sound with expressive nuances and clarity, and the bass — for such small speakers — is tight, solid, and grippy. While we enjoy how fun and energetic the Neat Petite Classic sounds at a similar price point, the Epos speakers are even more precise and controlled in their rhythmic flexibility. They also handle more classical or intimate recordings exceptionally well and pair nicely with various amplifiers, from the budget-friendly Rotel A8 to the premium Naim Nait XS3.
The Epos ES-7N speakers are charming. They are small, powerful, and surprisingly straightforward to use. The fact that they acknowledge not everyone will be able to position their speakers perfectly and still sound great when placed on bookshelves is a rare talent worth noting. If your budget allows for these speakers and you have a small space to work with, we wholeheartedly recommend them.
7. PMC Prodigy 5 — Best Premium Floor Standing Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Floor Standing
- Drivers: 27mm tweeter, 13cm mid/bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: No
- Impedance: 6 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 87.3 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 90.5 x 16.5 x 23.7 cm
- Finishes: 1 (black)
Pros:
- Superb, refined sound
- Excellent value for money
- Not picky about placement
Cons:
- Inevitable aesthetic sacrifices
PMC has a reputation for producing high-quality Hi-Fi equipment, and while the superb Prodigy 5 has become our top premium floor-standing speakers on this list, they actually offer an astonishing value for money.
The priority for Prodigy 5, like their five-star siblings Prodigy 1, has been to achieve maximum sound output per unit weight, putting design and aesthetic considerations aside in pursuit of the best sound achievable for this price.
And these efforts have paid off handsomely. With the Prodigy 5, PMC has hit the mark. The speakers combine subtle details and musical finesse with an enhanced sense of presence, balance, and confidence. In terms of sound, we haven’t heard better new speakers this year, and it’s the Prodigy 5's musical capabilities that earned them a What Hi-Fi? award.
The Prodigy 5 draws the best from all worlds without a hint of sonic compromise. While competitors in a similar price range may trade space for precision or dynamics for refinement, these modest PMC speakers are genuinely versatile. They possess scale and grandeur without sacrificing the intimacy or nuances of compositions. It's a remarkable feat and has made us eager to test more tracks to see what the Prodigy 5 can do with them.
Overall, a remarkable success story. True champions.
8. Mission 770 — Best High-End Desktop Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Desktop
- Drivers: 28mm tweeter, 20cm mid/bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: No
- Nominal Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 88 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 59 x 30 x 30 cm (with stands)
- Weight: 19.2 kg
- Finishes: 2 (black, walnut)
Pros:
- Clear and insightful performance
- Impressive bass clarity
- Dedicated stands included in the price
Cons:
- Large and sprawling by today’s standards
The Mission 770 speakers were inspired by the design of the original 770 speakers released in the 1970s, but they have improved and modernized every other element, from cabinet design to drivers and even new dedicated stands.
While some may find the retro design to be the main attraction, the superior sound of these speakers overshadows it. The 770 model boasts numerous strengths that set it apart from most competitors and allow us to wholeheartedly recommend it.
They are highly accurate when it comes to reproducing deep bass. Bass textures and low-frequency information are conveyed delicately while sounding tight and agile, even in the most complex compositions. They also have plenty of power and energy. The drivers are slightly forward-focused, especially in the clean and expressive midrange, which sounds vibrant and captivating without being overly aggressive.
The stereo imaging is impressive. In our review, we wrote: “It’s multi-layered and well-focused… pleasantly stable even as the music becomes more complex.”
Tracks are delivered with a wide dynamic range, impressive power, and scale. It’s a musically cohesive, controlled, and well-organized presentation. If you have the budget and space for these speakers, they are worth listening to.
Epos ES14N is a worthy alternative, and if your budget allows, the KEF Reference 1 Meta is also highly recommended.
9. Spendor A7 — Best High-End Floor Standing Speakers
Specifications:
- Type: Floor Standing
- Drivers: 22mm tweeter, 18cm mid/bass driver
- Rear Ported: Yes
- Bi-Wired: No
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Sensitivity: 88 dB
- Dimensions (H x W x D): 93.4 x 18 x 30.5 cm
- Weight: 17.7 kg
- Finishes: 4 (black oak, walnut, oak, satin white)
Pros:
- P stunning insight and accuracy
- Expressive sound
- Compact size and unassuming character
Cons:
- Requires careful system matching for best performance
These Spendor A7 floor speakers, the elder siblings of the A-Line series, feature remarkable sound quality, look great, and are compact enough to fit in most homes.
The build quality is top-notch, with crisp edges and flawless veneer finishes in black ash, dark walnut, or natural oak — there’s also a matte white option available for an added cost. While these speakers have been around for quite some time and have seen price increases, they still perform exceptionally well and are well worth the investment.
Each speaker contains an 18cm mid/bass driver and a 22mm high-frequency driver with a wide coverage for even sound distribution. The sound is refined yet captivating, combining stunning precision, clarity, and sophistication with incredibly enjoyable dynamics and rhythm. They synchronize perfectly and are incredibly transparent without crossing into “clinical” territory. In our review, we performed songs from Lorde, Massive Attack, and Ólufar Arnalds and said that “Spendors remain flexible and restrained throughout the performance, managing each musical line like an experienced puppeteer.”
However, be cautious when connecting them. The A7 will work well with most powerful amplifiers, but something like a powerful yet balanced Roksan Blak or Naim Supernait 3 will add some warmth to the overall sound.
If you’re looking for a new pair of high-end floor speakers, these elegant Spendor A7 should be at the top of your list.
Also Consider
There are many excellent speakers that we couldn't include in the main list above, so here are a few alternative options, both new and old, that we recommend for anyone seeking a new pair of speakers.
- Dali Spektor 2: As a budget alternative to the Wharfedale Diamond 12.1, these long-lasting Dali speakers are a surefire choice. They have a natural warmth in the mid-range that conveys the passion and nuances of voices, along with a smooth dynamism that makes them appealing and interesting to listen to.
- Neat Petite Classic: If you're short on space but want high-quality sound in a very compact size, these Petite Classic speakers are a great choice. Their size might not deliver the scale or deep bass of KEF R3 Meta, but their astounding rhythmic accuracy and flexibility, quality sound, and engaging sound make them a favorite.
- Q Acoustics 5050: These award-winning flagship floor speakers deserve serious consideration, especially if you have enough space. They sound more balanced and mature than the five-star Q Acoustics 5040, and the added power and detail more than justify the higher price.
- Wharfedale Evo 4.4: Former winners in the “Floor Speakers” category, they remain competitive thanks to organized, transparent, and nuanced music reproduction, making them enjoyable for extended listening sessions. These speakers handle loud sound easily and provide a good balance between attack and smoothness.
- Sonus Faber Lumina V: Elegant Italian charm in aesthetics and sound. These stylish floor speakers deliver clarity and subtlety, providing sufficient depth and bass power while remaining relaxed, restrained, and charming.
- Fyne Audio F502SP: If you want scale experiences, these Fyne floor speakers will impress you with their breathtaking scale and solidity. Their strengths lie in engaging dynamics and a clear stereo image, while they trade refinement for energy and powerful bass.
- Epos ES14N: While not visually stunning, these larger monitors are very impressive when it comes to analysis, organization, and control. Their detailing and dynamics at lower levels are remarkable, and voices sound open and clear. We could wish for a bit more rhythmic flexibility, but we cannot fault the stunning clarity and cohesion.
Upcoming Speakers to Look Out For
- Neat Iota II: We have been fans of these ultra-compact and fun speakers for years, and the second-generation model maintains the compact size while updating the mid/bass driver and crossover, retailing at approximately $1,200 for a pair. We expect to review this model in the coming months.
- PMC Prophecy Series: PMC has launched a new line of premium speakers (a step up from the already excellent Prodigy line), and we are excited to hear it. The range consists of a pair of floor speakers, three floor speakers, and a center speaker, with prices ranging from $3,000 to $11,000.
- Ruark Audio Sabre-R: Ruark, known for its stylish digital and smart internet radios, has returned to its roots with a pair of bookshelf speakers priced around $800. We expect to receive a sample for review in the coming months.
- Acoustic Energy 300 Series: A completely revamped range of mid-range and premium models with drivers based on flagship models. Prices range from $800 for stand-mounts to $2,400 for floor models.
- Quad ESL-2912X: It's been 12 years since Quad released the last electrostatic speaker, and we eagerly anticipate this next-generation model launching this summer. We really like the current ESL-2812 model, but the new 2912X is positioned as the flagship with improved performance.
- Wharfedale Super Linton: The Super Lintons are an upgraded version of the outstanding Wharfedale Lintons from 2019, which we called “undeniably excellent” in our five-star review. The price is approximately $3,500 with stands.
How to Choose the Best Speakers?
Start by determining your budget. Your components should be balanced in sound and price, so think about this before spending a fortune on a new pair of speakers that won't harmonize with the rest of your system.
You also need to ensure your speakers fit your room. Most speakers require certain space to sound their best, so don't purchase speakers that are too large for your listening area. Now is also the time to consider whether you need floor-standing or bookshelf speakers. Larger speakers provide higher volume but, again, require space.
Also, make sure your system's amplifier can handle the speakers without issue and that the sound of each component in your system complements one another. A pair of speakers with a bright sound may sound too harsh or shrill when paired with equally bright/high-end heavy equipment, so it's worth reading a few reviews or — if you have the opportunity — listening to the speakers before making a decision. If you’re buying high-end models, it’s smart to talk to a seller and spend time matching the system.
You can also choose between passive and active speakers. All the speakers on this list are passive, meaning they lack a built-in amplifier and require an external amplifier for operation. Active speakers or powered speakers with built-in amplifiers (and sometimes DACs and streaming capabilities) are becoming increasingly popular. They can connect directly to a sound source without an amplifier, but they do require a power connection.
In conclusion, picking the right speakers for your audio system can truly enhance your experience. Have you found your perfect match yet? To add a touch of style to your listening space, shop our favorite album cover posters at our store here.
